I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
The film begins with an opening crawl saying that the Galactic Republic is in a period of recent decline. In response to a taxation on trade routes, the Trade Federation organizes a blockade of battleships around the planet of Naboo. Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum dispatches two Jedi Knights, Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan (apprentice) Obi-Wan Kenobi, to negotiate with Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray to end the blockade.
However, the Trade Federation's secret adviser, Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith, orders the Viceroy to kill the Jedi Knights and invade Naboo with an army of battle droids. The two Jedi escape to Naboo by stowing aboard landing craft, where Qui-Gon saves Gungan outcast Jar Jar Binks from being crushed alive by a Federation tank. Indebted to the Jedi, Jar Jar leads them to the underwater Gungan city of Otoh Gunga; there, the Jedi unsuccessfully attempt to persuade the Gungans to help Naboo, though they are able to obtain a transport (called a Bongo) to reach the Capital city of Theed on the surface of Naboo, taking Jar Jar along, and venture to make it through the planet core. They are attacked by giant carnorivous fish along the way but they manage to escape by searching for bigger fish that eat their attackers, during which Qui-Gon points out, "There's always a bigger fish".
The queen of Naboo, Amidala, is meanwhile captured by the Federation Army, but is rescued by the Jedi. Sensing there is more to the situation than is let on, Qui-Gon recommends The Queen should address the Senate on Coruscant. The group escapes Naboo with the Jedi on her personal starship, to make its way to Coruscant. After the Trade Federation blockade damages the ship, the hyperdrive generator malfunctions and the ship is forced to land on the planet Tatooine for repairs. Qui-Gon ventures into the settlement of Mos Espa with Jar Jar and the astromech droid R2-D2 to a junk shop to purchase a new hyperdrive generator. The queen tags along with them, posing as the handmaiden Padmė, after having switched places with her decoy Sabė prior to leaving Naboo.
While walking around the town, they meet a 9-year-old slave child, Anakin Skywalker, a gifted pilot and engineer who has created his own protocol droid, C-3PO, who helps him around with the house chores. Qui-Gon senses a strong presence of the Force within the boy, and suspects he may be the "Chosen One" of Jedi prophecy who will bring balance to the Force. Qui-Gon makes a bet with Anakin's owner, Watto, to enter him in a podracing tournament; if Anakin wins, he will be freed. Qui-Gon also tricks him into thinking that the ship Anakin built is his own. Anakin wins the race and joins the group to be trained as a Jedi, but has to leave his mother Shmi behind. On their way back to the starship, they encounter Darth Sidious' apprentice, Darth Maul, who was dispatched to capture the Queen.
Having escaped the attack, the Jedi escort the Queen to the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant so she can plead her people's case to the Galactic Senate. Qui-Gon informs the Jedi Council about his recent attack on Tatooine and suspects of his attacker being a Sith. Qui-Gon also asks to train Anakin as a Jedi, but the Council, concerned that the boy's future is clouded by fear, declines. Meanwhile, Senator Palpatine of Naboo convinces the Queen to make a motion of no confidence in Valorum in attempt to vote for a stronger Chancellor who will help end the conflict. She pushes such a vote, but grows frustrated with the corruption in the Senate, eventually deciding to return to Naboo with the Jedi Knights.
Back on Naboo, Padmé reveals herself to the Gungan leaders to be the real Queen Amidala, the other "Queen" having been a decoy and loyal bodyguard. Padmé persuades the Gungans to form an alliance against the Trade Federation. While Jar Jar leads his tribe in a battle against the droid army, the Queen tries to capture Gunray in Theed, Anakin pilots a vacant starfighter (by an accident) and joins the battle against the Federation droid control ship in space. Trying to find a way to leave the battle, he accidentally ventures into the ship, but then blasts through the ship and disables the sensors and the ship's engines, destroying the ship and deactivating the droid army down on Naboo.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon engage Darth Maul in a lightsaber duel. Despite Maul's enormous skill, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon gradually force him to give ground; however, Obi-Wan is delayed when Maul knocks him off a platform, and when he catches up to them a temporary energy barrier prevents him from rejoining the duel. Facing Qui-Gon alone, Maul mortally wounds him. Obi-Wan arrives, and in a fit of rage cuts away half of Maul's two-bladed lightsaber; however, Maul remains relentless, wears him down and disarms him, trapping him on the edge of an abyss. Obi-Wan calms himself, leaping out of the pit and summoning Qui-Gon's lightsaber; he slices Maul in half and knocks him down in the abyss. Qui-Gon asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin and become his teacher, then dies. Palpatine, elected as the new Supreme Chancellor of the Republic and travels personally to Naboo to compliment Amidala for her bravery and to follow Anakin 'with great interest'. Gunray is at the same time sent to stand trial for his crimes. Obi-Wan is made a full-fledged Jedi Knight, and the Jedi Council accepts Anakin as Obi-Wan's Padawan, despite Yoda's reservations, sensing "grave danger' with Anakins future. However, the Jedi are even more mystified by the recent reemergence of the Sith, and even at Qui-Gon's funeral they are left to wonder if Darth Maul was the Sith master or merely the apprentice, since there are always two of them. At a festive ceremony the day after, Padmé presents a gift of appreciation and friendship to the Gungans, witnessed by Chancellor Palpatine, the present Jedi and the freshly couped Anakin, now in his padawan attire and braid.

II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
The Galactic Republic is in turmoil following the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation ten years earlier. Anakin Skywalker is now an apprentice to Obi-Wan Kenobi. The former Jedi Knight, Count Dooku, has organized a Separatist movement against the Republic, and the Galactic Senate is debating a plan to create an army for the Republic to assist the Jedi against the Separatist threat. Senator Padmé Amidala, the former queen of Naboo, returns to Coruscant to vote. Upon her arrival, she escapes an assassination attempt, and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine assigns Obi-Wan and Anakin to protect her. Obi-Wan and Anakin subdue the assassin, Zam Wessell, during another assassination attempt. However, before she can give them any information, the assassin is killed by her employer with a poisonous dart. Obi-Wan learns that the dart was manufactured on the remote ocean planet of Kamino, and is assigned to investigate, while Anakin is assigned to escort Padmé back to her home planet, Naboo, where he and Padmé fall in love. While investigating Kamino, Obi-Wan discovers that it has been removed from the navigation maps of the Jedi archives. Yoda reveals that such a thing could only have been done by a Jedi, suggesting that a conspiracy is afoot.
Obi-Wan travels to Kamino, where he discovers that an army of clone troopers is being secretly produced for the Republic, using a bounty hunter named Jango Fett as their genetic template. Realizing that Jango is the assassin's employer, Obi-Wan tracks Jango and his son Boba to Geonosis, a rocky planet where a new droid army is being created. Meanwhile, on Naboo, Anakin becomes troubled by premonitions of his mother Shmi in pain. Against Obi-Wan's orders, Anakin and Padmé travel to Tatooine. After meeting his new stepfather Cliegg Lars, as well as his stepbrother Owen, Anakin learns that Shmi was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders some weeks earlier. Anakin goes to the tribe's campsite to rescue Shmi, only to discover too late that his mother was tortured to death. After Anakin kills everyone at the campsite, he returns with Shmi's body and reveals his crime to Padmé, who comforts him.
Having discovered Dooku's authorization of the assassination attempt on Padmé and that the Separatists are developing a new battle droid army, Obi-Wan relays this information via hologram to Anakin, who transmits it to the Jedi Council. However, Obi-Wan is captured by Dooku mid-transmission. Dooku unsuccessfully attempts to make an ally of Obi-Wan, and reveals to him that the Republic is being secretly controlled by a Sith Lord named Darth Sidious. While Anakin and Padmé head to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan, Palpatine is granted emergency powers to organize the clone army and send them into battle. Shortly after arriving on Geonosis, Anakin and Padmé are captured by Jango and ordered to be publicly executed along with Obi-Wan. Anakin and Padmé profess their love before being led into a large gladiatorial arena where they and Obi-Wan are pitted against gigantic beasts. However, Mace Windu and a team of Jedi appear and lead a strong defense against the beasts and the Separatists. During the almighty battle that follows, Windu kills Jango Fett but then the Jedi find themselves outnumbered by the Separatists' droid army. As Dooku demands their surrender, Yoda arrives with reinforcements - the clone army.
As a battle engages between the Republic's clone army and the Separatists' droid forces, Obi-Wan and Anakin follow Dooku to try and prevent his escape. In a lightsaber duel, Dooku defeats them both, injuring Obi-Wan and severing Anakin's right arm, but then Yoda arrives in time to save them and challenges the Count himself. Unable to defeat Yoda, Dooku flees in his ship to Coruscant, taking the blueprints for a superweapon with him. He is met by Sidious, who states that everything is going as planned now that the galaxy is at war. As the Jedi gravely acknowledge the start of the Clone Wars, Palpatine supervises the launching of several battalions of clone troopers. Meanwhile, Anakin – now fitted with a robotic artificial arm – and Padmé secretly marry on Naboo, with C-3PO and R2-D2 as witnesses.

III – Revenge of the Sith
During a space battle over Coruscant between the Republic and the Separtists, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi initiate a plan to rescue the kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine from Seperatist commander General Grievous. Fighting buzz droids and infiltrating Greivous' flagship, the Jedi are confronted by Count Dooku, who engages them in a lightsaber duel. After Dooku knocks Obi-Wan unconscious, Anakin fights and kills Dooku at Palpatine's urging. Following a skirmish with Grievous, who then flees, the Jedi crash-land the cruiser on Coruscant which also breaks in half in the process. There, Anakin reunites with his wife, Padmé Amidala, who reveals she is pregnant. Initially excited, Anakin begins to have premonitions of Padmé dying in childbirth.
Palpatine places Anakin on the Jedi Council as his representative, but Anakin is not granted the rank of Jedi Master and ordered to secretly monitor the Chancellor. Frustrated at being excluded from the Council, Anakin begins to lose faith in the Jedi and becomes more attached to Palpatine, who tells him that the dark side of the Force holds the power to prevent death. On the planet Utapau, the last major haven for the Separatists, Obi-Wan leads a clone army and engages and kills Grievous. When Palpatine reveals himself as the Sith lord Darth Sidious, Anakin reports his treachery to Jedi Master Mace Windu. In the ensuing lightsaber duel, Windu subdues Palpatine by deflecting his opponent's Force Lightning back at him. Anakin intervenes on Palpatine's behalf, allowing Palpatine to kill Windu. Desperate to save Padmé, Anakin becomes Palpatine's apprentice and is rechristened Darth Vader.
Palpatine orders the Clone Troopers to kill their Jedi masters, and sends Vader and a legion of clone troopers to kill everyone at the Jedi Temple. Vader then travels to Mustafar to assassinate the Separatist leaders hiding there. Palpatine addresses the Senate and reforms the Republic into the Galactic Empire, declaring himself Emperor.
Discovering Anakin's treachery, Obi-Wan and Jedi Master Yoda split up to confront Vader and Sidious, respectively. Oblivious to Obi-Wan's reasoning that Anakin has turned to the dark side, Padmé travels to Mustafar. When Padmé discovers what Vader has done, she tries to take him back, but Vader accuses her of betraying him and uses the Force to choke her into unconsciousness. Obi-Wan, having stowed away on Padmé's ship, engages Vader in a fierce duel that ends with Obi-Wan severing Vader's legs and left arm. Vader falls down to the volcanic river's edge and is nearly immolated. Taking his former apprentice's lightsaber, Obi-Wan goes to help Padmé. Meanwhile, Yoda confronts Palpatine, but retreats after their duel reaches a stalemate.
On Polis Massa, Padmé gives birth to twins Luke and Leia. With her dying breaths, Padmé tells Obi-Wan that there is still good in Vader. Meanwhile, Palpatine finds Vader barely alive on Mustafar and brings him back to Coruscant, rebuilding his apprentice's ruined body with cybernetic limbs and a respirator. Tormented by the discovery of Padmé's death at his own hands, Vader screams, the last vestige of humanity driven from him. As Vader supervises the Death Star's construction, a funeral is held for Padmé, her body dressed to continue the illusion of pregnancy. Knowing that the twins must remain hidden from the Empire, Senator Bail Organa adopts Leia and takes her to Alderaan, while Luke is to be taken to his stepfamily on Tatooine. Organa allows the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 to remain aboard the Tantive IV and has C-3PO's memory erased. Yoda teaches Obi-Wan how to commune with the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn before going into exile on Dagobah. Obi-Wan takes the infant Luke to Tatooine and gives Luke to his uncle and aunt, where Obi-Wan intends to watch over Luke until the time is right to challenge the Empire.

IV – A New Hope
The galaxy is in a civil war and spies for the Rebel Alliance have stolen plans to the Galactic Empire's Death Star, a heavily armed and armored space station capable of destroying an entire planet. Rebel leader Princess Leia is in possession of the plans, but her ship is captured by Imperial forces under the command of the evil lord Darth Vader. Before she is captured, Leia hides the plans in the memory of an Astromech droid called R2-D2, along with a holographic recording. The small droid flees to the surface of the desert planet Tatooine with fellow protocol droid C-3PO.
The droids split up and are later captured by Jawa traders, who sell the pair to moisture farmers Owen and Beru Lars and their nephew, Luke Skywalker. While Luke is cleaning R2-D2, he accidentally triggers part of Leia's message, in which she requests help from Obi-Wan Kenobi. The only "Kenobi" Luke knows of is an old hermit named Ben Kenobi who lives in the nearby hills. The next morning, Luke finds R2-D2, who fled the night before to seek Obi-Wan, and meets Ben Kenobi, who reveals himself to be Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan tells Luke of his days as a Jedi Knight, one of a faction of former galactic peacekeepers who were wiped out by the Empire. Contrary to his uncle's statements, Luke learns that his father Anakin Skywalker fought alongside Obi-Wan as a Jedi Knight before he was betrayed and killed by Vader, Obi-Wan's former pupil who turned to the "dark side of the Force". Ben then offers Luke his father's lightsaber.
Obi-Wan views Leia's complete message in which she begs him to take the Death Star plans to her home planet of Alderaan for her father to retrieve and analyze. He then asks Luke to accompany him and learn the ways of the Force. Luke initially declines, but changes his mind after discovering that Imperial stormtroopers have destroyed his home and killed his aunt and uncle in search of C-3PO and R2-D2. Obi-Wan and Luke hire smuggler Han Solo and his Wookiee first mate Chewbacca to transport them on their ship, the Millennium Falcon.
Upon the Falcon's arrival at Alderaan, they find out that the planet has been destroyed under the orders of the Death Star's commanding officer Grand Moff Tarkin to intimidate Leia into revealing the hidden base of the Rebellion and to demonstrate the Death Star's power. The Falcon is captured by the nearby Death Star's tractor beam and brought into its hangar bay. While Obi-Wan goes to disable the tractor beam, Luke discovers that Leia is imprisoned on board and, with the help of Han and Chewbacca, rescues her. After several harrowing escapes, they make their way back to the Falcon, but Obi-Wan engages in a lightsaber duel with Vader at the expense of his own life. The Falcon escapes the Death Star but the Empire has placed a tracking device on the ship to follow them to the rebels' hidden base on Yavin IV.
The rebels analyze the Death Star plans, disclosing a vulnerable exhaust port leading to the station's main reactor. Luke joins the assault team, but Han collects his reward for the rescue and plans to leave despite Luke asking him to stay. During the Battle of Yavin, the rebels begin to deplete and suffer heavy losses after several unsuccessful attack runs, leaving Luke one of the few surviving pilots. Vader and a group of TIE fighters are about to attack Luke's ship, but Han Solo returns and destroys the TIE Fighters and the blast sends Vader spiraling away. Luke (with spiritual guidance from Obi-Wan to use the Force) successfully destroys the Death Star seconds before it can fire on the rebel base. Luke and Han are later awarded medals by Leia for their heroism.

V – The Empire Strikes Back

The film begins with an opening crawl explaining that three years after destroying the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance has suffered setbacks in their struggle against the Galactic Empire. Princess Leia now leads a contingent that includes Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in a hidden base on an icy planet of the Hoth system. A probe droid, one of many sent by Darth Vader throughout the galaxy in hopes of finding Luke and the other rebels, lands on Hoth. Luke goes to investigate but is ambushed by a monstrous, furry wampa. While Han Solo searches for him, Luke frees himself from the wampa's cave with his lightsaber but soon succumbs to the freezing temperatures of the snowy wasteland. The spirit of his late mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, appears before him and instructs him to go to the planet Dagobah to train under Jedi Master Yoda. Han finds Luke and uses the warmth of his dead tauntaun mount to keep him alive while they wait for rescue.
As Luke recovers, the Imperial fleet, having been alerted to the location of the Rebel base by the probe droid, launches an attack using gigantic AT-AT Walkers led by Vader, who is now pursuing Luke after sensing the Force in him when he destroyed the Death Star. The Rebels mount a strong defense, and Luke brings down a walker single-handedly after his fighter is disabled, but the base is nonetheless captured. Han and Leia escape on the Millennium Falcon with C-3PO and Chewbacca, but their hyperspace drive malfunctions, and they must hide in an asteroid field. Luke escapes with R2-D2 in an X-wing fighter and crash lands on Dagobah. He meets the diminutive Yoda, who at first pretends to be a simple swamp inhabitant in order to test Luke's patience. After conferring with Obi-Wan's spirit, Yoda accepts Luke as his pupil.
Han and Leia end their bickering and grow closer, but their courtship is interrupted when they must flee a giant asteroid worm. They avoid capture again by attaching the Millennium Falcon directly to the side of a Star Destroyer in Vader's fleet. Frustrated at having lost them, Vader turns to several notorious bounty hunters, including Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Luke begins a brief period of intensive training, during which his power in the Force grows exponentially. He suffers a setback when he fails a test and sees the vision of his own face inside Darth Vader's helmet. Later, he becomes troubled by premonitions of Han and Leia in pain; despite Yoda and Obi-Wan's disapprovals, he leaves to save them, promising to return to complete his training.
Having escaped detection, Han lets the ship float away with the star destroyer's garbage and sets a course for Cloud City, a floating gas mining colony in the skies of the planet Bespin run by Han's old friend Lando Calrissian. Shortly after they arrive, though, Lando reluctantly turns them over to Vader and Boba Fett, who followed them to Bespin, to prevent the takeover of his city. Over Lando's objections, Vader uses them as bait to bring Luke into his trap.
Vader intends to hold Luke in suspended animation and selects Han as a test subject for the process. Han and Leia profess their love for each other, after which Han is frozen in a block of carbonite. Reneging on his deal with Lando, Vader gives Han's hibernating form to Boba Fett, who plans to present this "prize" to Jabba the Hutt who put a price on Han's head for not paying a debt that he previously owed to Jabba. Lando frees Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO, but they are too late to stop Fett from escaping with Han, forcing them to flee in the Millennium Falcon without him.
Meanwhile, Luke has arrived at Cloud City, as Vader planned. Luke and Vader engage in a lightsaber duel that leads them over the central air shaft of Cloud City. Vader severs Luke's right hand, disarming him, and reveals that he did not kill Luke's father, but actually is Luke's father. Horrified by this fact, Luke refuses Vader's offer to rule the galaxy at his side, choosing instead to throw himself down the air shaft. He slides through a tube system and is ejected but catches onto an antenna under the floating city. He makes a desperate telepathic plea to Leia, who senses it and persuades Lando to return for him. When its hyperdrive is finally repaired by R2-D2, the Millennium Falcon escapes. Aboard a Rebel medical frigate, Luke is fitted with a robotic artificial hand. As Luke, Leia, R2-D2, and C-3PO look on from the medical center, Lando and Chewbacca set off in the Millennium Falcon to rescue Han from Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt.

VI – Return of the Jedi
Luke Skywalker initiates a plan to rescue Han Solo from the crime lord Jabba the Hutt with the help of Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2. Leia infiltrates Jabba's palace on Tatooine disguised as a bounty hunter and releases Han from a block of carbonite, but she is captured and enslaved. Luke arrives soon afterward and allows himself to be captured. After Luke survives a battle with the Rancor, Jabba sentences Luke and Han to death by being eaten by the Sarlacc. Luke breaks free and a large battle engages, during which Leia strangles Jabba to death, Han knocks Boba Fett into the gaping maw of the Sarlacc and Luke destroys Jabba's sail barge. While Han and Leia meet with the other Rebels, Luke returns to Dagobah, only to find that Yoda is dying. With his last breaths, Yoda confirms that Darth Vader, once known as Anakin Skywalker, is Luke's father; he also mentions "another Skywalker". The spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi confirms Luke's insight that the "other Skywalker" Yoda spoke of is Luke's twin sister, Leia. Obi-Wan then tells Luke that he must fight Vader again to defeat the Empire.
The Rebel Alliance learns that the Empire has been constructing a new Death Star, and hatches a plan to destroy it. Both Vader and his Sith master Emperor Palpatine, the Empire's ruler, are aboard to supervise its completion. Han leads a strike team to destroy the battle station's shield generator on the forest moon of Endor, allowing a squadron of starfighters to enter the incomplete superstructure and destroy the station from within. The strike team, with Luke in tow, travels to Endor in an Imperial shuttle; Vader senses Luke's presence on the shuttle, but lets them through so that they will be ambushed by the Imperial forces lying in wait on Endor. Sensing Vader's presence, Luke fears he is endangering the mission.
On Endor, Luke and his companions encounter a tribe of Ewoks and after an initial conflict, form a partnership with them. Later, Luke confesses to Leia that she is his sister, that Vader is their father and that he is leaving to confront him. Luke surrenders to Imperial troops, so that they will bring him to Vader. He unsuccessfully tries to convince Vader to turn from the dark side of the Force. Vader takes Luke to the Death Star to meet the Emperor, intent on turning his son to the dark side.
With the Death Star fully operational, the Emperor says it is set to destroy the Rebellion. On Endor, Han's strike team is captured by Imperial forces, but a surprise counterattack by the Ewoks allows the Rebels to launch an attack. Meanwhile, Lando in the Millennium Falcon leads the Rebel fleet to attack the Death Star, only to find the station's shield is still active and the Imperial fleet is waiting for them. The Emperor tempts Luke to give in to his anger and join the dark side, and Luke and Vader engage in a lightsaber duel. Vader discovers that Leia is Luke's sister, and threatens to turn her to the dark side. Luke, enraged at this possibility, attacks Vader, severing his father's right hand. The Emperor entreats Luke to kill Vader and take his place, but Luke refuses, declaring himself a Jedi. Furious, the Emperor attacks him with Force Lightning. Unable to watch his son suffer, the suppressed 'good side' in Vader is rekindled and he kills the Emperor, thus fulfilling the prophecy that he would be the one to bring balance to the force. In the process, however, Vader is mortally wounded by the Emperor's lightning. With his dying breaths, the redeemed Vader asks Luke to remove his mask so he can look on his son with his own eyes instead of through the mask. Now revealed as Anakin Skywalker, he asks Luke to tell Leia that there was still good left in him after all.

Luke Skywalker unmasks his redeemed father.
On Endor, the strike team, with the help of the Ewoks, defeats the Imperial forces and destroys the shield generator base, allowing the Rebel fleet to launch a final assault on the Death Star. Lando leads the remaining ships into the station's core and destroys the main reactor. Luke escapes on Palpatine's Imperial shuttle with his father's body, while Lando escapes in the Falcon just moments before the Death Star explodes. On Endor, Han tells Leia that he knows she loves Luke and offers to step aside; she tells him that Luke is her brother and kisses him. That evening, Luke returns to Endor and cremates his father's armor on a funeral pyre. As the Rebels celebrate the end of the Empire, Luke sees the spirits of Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker watching over them.
