so everything before luke doesnt really have anything to do with the heroes journey, i mean, it doesnt really establish lukes original world, if anything it is establishing the new world.

The early part of the film was what I was just pondering. Yes, it's setting up the stakes for Luke's hero's journey, and it doesn't seem to be directly linked with Campbell's model. But when you consider Luke's return to normal life (at the end of the trilogy) the early part of this film is a set-up of his ordinary world. The action on his home planet is just a small part of it.

Perhaps, there's a lot of world war symbolism in Star Wars, 'storm troopers' is probably the most prominent one.

Ooh, yeah. Lucas really had it tough with the prequels - the Cold War was over and everyone had forgiven the Germans - he had to resort to blatant prejudice to create the new villains.

Notice that Lucas puts a lot of Gatekeepers in Luke's way - we've already had the sand people preventing his access to Obi-Wan. Maybe a reflection of our understanding of what a hero is - once we were satisfied with someone going on a long journey and encountering a few problems, but now the hero really needs to earn it?
