My instinct is that it's a test on the road of trials, but it could also be a temptation from the true path.

Vader is (pretty obviously) the father figure. Although Luke's complete/overt atonement with his father happens in VI, it begins here - although he says he rejects him, by taking on a robotic arm after being cut off, and accepting the truth about his parentage, Luke is really achieving this stage. It's interesting to note that to some extent Vader is Luke's shadow, and by becoming closer to his shadow (again with the arm), Luke is able to accept more about himself..

In this instance, Luke's 'Nooooooo! No!' actually does mean, 'Yes. Yes.'

Also this is the point that Vader changes too to becoming a father in reality-> sacrifice of himself to save Luke in VI

Symbolic for Lucas not wanting to follow in his father's footsteps maybe?

Because Lucas can't write for women. Padme dies of ... well, femininity, after all.
